Welcome to the Menden-Deuer Lab

We are plankton ecologists who conduct hypothesis driven experiments in the laboratory, at sea and in silico to decipher patterns in plankton abundance, distribution and rates of growth and grazing. The video clip to the right shows a single celled predator (large dots) swimming in a suspension of algae (small dots).

Plankton Ecology

There are two major research themes in the lab plankton production and motility. The animation on the left shows the swimming track of a single-celled plankton, the photo below right shows the ocean surface and is a reminder of the complex and dynamic environment plankton inhabit.
